OCEANSIDE (CNS) - A search was under way Friday for a man who slipped into a children's bedroom in a ground-floor apartment in Oceanside and molested an 11-year-old girl, police said.
The break-in at an apartment complex in the 700 block of Carey Road was reported about 3:40 a.m. Thursday, said acting Captain Leonard Mata of the Oceanside Police Department. Three children were in the bedroom when the intruder, a thin male, entered through an unlocked window, he said.
The victim told investigators she awoke to find the assailant kneeling over her and touching her in a sexual manner. Mata said that after the girl screamed, he fled through the same unlocked window he used to get in.
At some point prior to molesting the girl, the intruder closed and locked the bedroom door, preventing family members from coming in when they heard the girl screaming, Mata said.
Police searched the area in vain for the suspect, who wore a bandana over his face, Mata said.
Mata said residents should make sure their windows and doors are locked before they go to sleep.
