Two-alarm fire damages south Mission Beach apartment complex

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A stubborn two-alarm fire tore through a South Mission Beach duplex Friday, extensively damaging the structure but causing no reported injuries.

The blaze in the 2900 block of Bayside Lane erupted for unknown reasons shortly before 1:30 p.m., according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

A resident of one of the units in the three-story building just south of Belmont Park smelled smoke, opened his front door and was confronted with thick smoke, SDFRD spokesman Maurice Luque said. The man was able to escape unharmed by jumping out a second-floor window.

The intense flames caused a home just behind the duplex to begin smoldering, but crews were able to keep it from catching fire, according to Luque.

Two hours after the blaze began, firefighters were still working to fully extinguish hot spots and burning areas inside the walls and attic of the structure, the spokesman said.
