Albert's Mexican Food: Home of the big rolled taco

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Build a beefier rolled taco and the town will beat a path to your door. It's worked for Albert's Mexican Food in Lakeside.

"I didn't want to be the traditional taco shop with a traditional rolled taco. I wanted to still keep it, but I wanted to do something different," Albert Garzon said.

So Albert started adding more beef, kind of biggie-sizing the traditional rolled taco. And business boomed.

"We actually have three now. We have the Lakeside store, we have one in Rancho San Diego and we also have the new one downtown," Albert said.

And at every location, Albert's menu has been localized, and some healthy choices have been added.

"We actually have lettuce wraps, which are actually a lettuce cup for a low-carb like meal," Albert said.

There is one thing that's very traditional about Albert's Mexican Food: he is surrounded by family. Mom can be found maintaining quality control in the kitchen.

"Having my family part of this whole business actually makes it even that much better, because not only do I get to see them on a regular basis, we actually get to grow the business together as a family," Albert said.

In a crowded playing field, Albert's has managed to find a tasty niche, using fresh ingredients, Angus carne asada and a healthy portion of mi familia.

"I didn't want to do like every taco shop on every corner. I wanted us to stand out," Albert said.

And speaking of stand-outs, the big rolled taco is a unique treat.
