Family keeps puppy's life from going down the tubes

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - His chances of survival weren't good, but days after being rescued from being trapped in a PVC pipe, a little puppy is becoming one local family's top dog.

On September 24, Amanda Correa and her family were doing construction work on their home in Tijuana when they got to a section of the bathroom piping and noticed something moving inside.

"I told my father-in-law 'Oh my god, that thing has something inside,'" she said.

She heard squealing.

"I said 'This a rat!'" Amanda said.

The Correas took a saw and carefully cut through the thick PVC piping. Inside, they found the puppy, severely malnourished, with a skin problem and covered with fleas.

"We were so nervous because we thought he was going to die," Amanda said.

Less than two weeks later, Toby is alive and well, and well on the road to becoming Correa's new best friend for years to come.

The Correa family came up with the name Toby after playing around with names similar to the word "tube."
