LA MESA (CNS) - La Mesa police Thursday impounded a vehicle believed to have been involved in a hit-and-run crash that left a 2-year-old boy seriously injured.

A tip from a local Volkswagen dealer led investigators to the car, which was picked up in El Cajon this morning, La Mesa police Sgt. Peter Andersson said. The hit-and-run crash occurred on Aug. 25 as the boy was apparently trying to cross Fletcher Parkway without adult supervision.

The driver immediately drove away from the crash scene, the sergeant said.

"The La Mesa Police Department is continuing their investigation to determine who was driving the car at the time of the collision," Andersson said.

Police said the toddler suffered head and spinal injuries when he was struck in the 8600 block of Fletcher Parkway, near Trolley Court, about 7:50 p.m. Aug. 25.

Police had appealed to the public to keep an eye out for a white Volkswagen Passat wagon with a luggage rack and possible damage to the left front bumper area.

The boy's parents were home at the time of the crash, La Mesa police Sgt. Bret Richards said, but the toddler apparently slipped out of the house without their knowledge.

The boy's injuries were serious but not life-threatening, according to police.
