UNIVERSITY CITY (CBS 8) - A large sinkhole that opened up on a University City street Thursday has doubled in size Friday.

At least a dozen nearby businesses are without water in the middle of Campus Point Drive near Campus Point Court, just north of UCSD.

City crews determined a storm-water pipe had ruptured below the street and leaked runoff flows that eroded the ground beneath the pavement.

A passer-by discovered the water-filled chasm in the middle of the roadway shortly before 7:30 a.m., according to San Diego police.

The sinkhole eventually grew to about 50 feet in length and 25 feet in width, but has since doubled in size.
