Oceanside woman floats new idea for her huge pumpkin

OCEANSIDE (CBS 8) - An Oceanside couple is excited about the huge pumpkin they're grown, but the most exciting part is what they plan to do with it.

Norma and Nick Bachert from Oceanside boast they love to do Halloween big, and this year they have the pumpkin -- estimated to weigh between 600 and 700 pounds -- to prove it.

"You can actually almost watch it grow. It'll be like a softball, and you go out the next day, it'll be like a basketball," Nick said.

They named their ginormous gourd Leon, after a famous line in "Airplane."

"So every day he kept on getting larger," Norma said.

Leon sprouted from special seeds a neighbor got from Napa Valley.

"It was growing up the house, it was growing up the trees," Norma said.

Leon's predecessor Frank, which weighed in at 225 pounds. Norma managed to carve him into a Frankenstein jack-o-lantern last Halloween.

"It took a lot of work. My hand was aching for two days," she said.

And this year, inspired by pumpkin boat races they've seen, the Bacherts are floating the idea of hollowing Leon out and riding it in their neighbors' pool. But is their neighbor on board?

"His wife is all for it. He's like, well, what if it sinks? How are we gonna get it out?" Norma said.
