Possible cougar sighting at North County school

Posted: Updated:

POWAY (CNS) - An unconfirmed reported sighting of a mountain lion near a North County neighborhood Tuesday prompted a search of the area and some extra security precautions at a nearby primary school.

A resident made an emergency call to report seeing what appeared to be a cougar near Chaparral Elementary in Poway about 10:45 a.m., according to sheriff's officials.

Administrators at the Tannin Drive campus kept all pupils indoors while deputies and state Fish and Game officers checkout out the area, finding no sign of a mountain lion.

In a letter sent home to parents, school Principal Dawn Zwibel said her staffers had taken additional safety measures, including extra supervision as classes let out for the day, "in an abundance of caution."

POWAY (CBS 8) – A cougar may have been spotted near Chaparral Elementary School in Poway Tuesday. A call has been placed to parents via the school's notification system to notify them of the sighting.

The following is the message sent to parents from Chaparral Elementary:

Today it was reported to us by a Poway Sheriff's Deputy that a resident reported a possible sighting of a cougar near the school. The sheriff contacted the Fish and Game Department and did a sweep of the neighborhood, at which time there was no evidence of the cougar and the search was called off.

In an abundance of caution, we kept students off of the playground for the afternoon, and we will employ extra supervision at dismissal.

Thank you,
Miss Zwibel
