Another mountain lion sighting near Poway school

Posted: Updated:

POWAY (CNS) - For a second consecutive day, an unconfirmed sighting of a mountain lion wandering a North County neighborhood prompted a search of the area and some extra safety measures at a nearby grammar school.

A parent of a child who attends Chaparral Elementary in Poway reported seeing what appeared to be a cougar in the area this morning, prompting school administrators to keep all pupils indoors for the remainder of the day out of "an abundance of caution," Principal Dawn Zwibel said in an email notification to the families of her student body.

A similar report prompted the same precautions at the Tannin Drive campus on Tuesday.

Deputies and state Fish and Game officers checked out out the area, finding no sign of a mountain lion or similar wild animal native to the region's back country, officials said.

POWAY (CBS 8) - There has been another mountain lion sighting reported Wednesday morning near Chaparral Elementary in Poway. Students are inside the building and parents have been notified.

The school's principal sent the following message to parents:

Dear Parents,

Today, a second sighting of a mountain lion near Chaparral was reported by a parent. The Department of Fish and Game has responded, and at this time they are still investigating.

In an abundance of caution, and due to the heat today, we have kept students off of the playground for the remainder of the day. We will employ extra supervision at dismissal. If you have any information regarding this matter, please contact the Poway Sheriff's Department.

Thank you,

Miss Zwibel
