EL CAJON (CBS 8) - A woman was hit by a pickup truck and killed Thursday night, while trying to cross the street in the 600 block of E. Washington Ave. in El Cajon. Police barricaded several intersections while they investigated.
A relative of the victim says she was in her 50's, was a mother of five and a widow. The relative says the woman was walking home from church, when the accident happened. She was excited to "start a new life" after moving to the United States from Iraq a couple years ago, after her husband died in a bomb explosion in Iraq.
El Cajon Police Lt. Frank La Haye told News 8 the driver of the truck stopped after the accident. It does not appear she will face any charges, as investigators do not believe speed or alcohol was a factor. Investigators say the victim had on dark clothing while she tried to cross the street at night. The victim was with a friend who not hit or injured.
Neighbors say some in the community have previously petitioned for a stop sign, traffic light or crosswalk at the intersection where the deadly accident happened.
The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of family members.
