32-year-old gorilla dies at San Diego Zoo

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (AP) - A 32-year-old gorilla named Alberta has died at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports Alberta was found dead in her enclosure Thursday night.

Park spokeswoman Christina Simmons says Alberta had been having problems with her shoulder recently, which may have been a sign of more serious problems.

Alberta came to the zoo at one month of age, and gave birth to three gorillas during her life. She adopted a fourth.

Simmons says gorillas in captivity typically die in their 30s, though some have been known to live up to 50 years.

There are now five gorillas at Safari Park and 10 at the San Diego Zoo.
