SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Many shelters are full and need support and it's not just cats and dogs.

Some say the down economy has had a negative effect on the pet horse population.

"October the first, over 1,600 horses went to slaughter in Mexico. A lot of those come from California, Arizona, Texas and people are just unaware of what the need is out there so we can't save them all, but we're trying to do it one at a time," said Founder of the Tijuana River Valley Animal Rescue, Karen Groebli.

The proceeds from the Pet Expo will go to animal shelters and rescues.
