Prelim. hearing for serial burglar accused of attacking San Diego police officer in City Heights

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A serial burglary suspect accused of slashing a female San Diego police officer and a good Samaritan with a knife during a struggle in City Heights is scheduled to appear at the downtown courthouse Monday for a preliminary hearing that will determine if he has to stand trial.

Michael Anthony Gonzales, 43, is charged with two counts of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, battery on a police officer causing injury and resisting an officer.

Gonzales allegedly attacked Officer Kelly Doherty after she stopped him on his bicycle for a traffic violation on 34th Street near Orange Avenue about 12:35 p.m. on Aug. 13.

Deputy District Attorney Oscar Garcia said Gonzales was cooperative until the officer discovered the cyclist was wanted for missing a scheduled court appearance in a residential burglary case.

"He attacked the officer, threw her down and stomped the officer on the head, face and body area," Garcia said.

The prosecutor said Doherty suffered a cut to the chin and one in the back of her neck caused by a folding knife with a blade about three or four inches long.

Three passers-by tried to help Doherty, and one suffered injuries to his neck, back and arms when he intervened, the prosecutor said.

Garcia said the officer fired a Taser at Gonzales, and she eventually subdued him with help from one of the good Samaritans.

At the end of the preliminary hearing, a judge will decide whether enough evidence was presented for Gonzales to stand trial.

Gonzales is charged separately with burglary. A preliminary hearing on that case is set for Nov. 1.
