COLTON, Calif. (AP) — Two freight trains have collided and scattered rail cars on tracks beneath a Southern California interstate near one of the nation's largest railroad yards.
The derailment shut down Interstate 10 in San Bernardino County for hours and forced closure of two Colton schools while the rail cars are up-righted and the track repaired.
There are no injuries and no homes or businesses are being evacuated.
A hazardous materials squad was dispatched after the 2:10 a.m. derailment, but Colton fire spokesman Tom Debellis says none of the five tanker cars carrying corrosive ferrous chloride are leaking. The sixth rail car was hauling automobiles.
The six Union Pacific cars are on their sides under the interstate.
Eastbound lanes of the interstate were shut down more than four hours as a precaution.
