Dog survives months on his own at Poway Lake

POWAY (CBS 8) - An English mastiff on the loose, not for days -- but for months -- around Poway has been rescued. Boo survived by eating out of trash cans and is severely malnourished. But now thanks to a joint effort by some animal lovers, he is on the road to recovery and adoption.

"We don't really know how long he was out there. We know it was long enough for people to be concerned about him," rescuer Deborah Solohub said.

Fifteen years in the business, and Deborah has probably rescued close to 1,500 animals.

"They brought him right to me," Deborah said.

But it took teamwork to save this English mastiff. Rescuer Noreen says she named the dog Boo because the second he was spotted around Lake Poway, he got spooked and took off running.

"I said, I'm going to get that dog," Noreen said.

Days later, Noreen went back, this time with a leash and some food, and she wasn't coming home without Boo.

"We couldn't stand the thought of him out there hungry," she said.

Within 30 minutes, she dropped off a severely malnourished Boo at Deborah's rescue. But she was already well aware of Boo.

"His haunches were very thin and his ribs were incredibly visible," Deborah said.

On Tuesday, Boo was brought to ER4PETS for a check-up from Dr. Diana Jones, the woman who handles all of Deborah's rescues.

"He is in excellent shape. Deborah can definitely get him in better shape and get him adopted," Jones said.

Thanks to a network of animal lovers, Boo is well on the road toward a healthy life and forever home.

"And he will live happily ever after," Deborah said.

Boo was not found with any tags, and it is unclear who the owner is.
