Woman who killed her baby 25 years ago now accused of attacking mom

CHULA VISTA (CNS) - An Otay Mesa woman who killed her baby daughter 25 years ago by throwing her into San Diego Bay pleaded not guilty Wednesday to attempted murder and other charges for allegedly attacking her 86-year-old mother with a knife.

Lorenza Delgadillo Penguelly, 51, was ordered held without bail. She faces life in prison if convicted, said Deputy District Attorney Ted Minahan.

In addition to attempted murder, the defendant is charged with assault with a deadly weapon and elder abuse.

Penguelly was arrested shortly after 6:30 a.m. Monday at the apartment she shares with her mother in the 1100 block of 25th Street, just south of Coronado Avenue.

Medics took Penguelly's mother to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening puncture and slash wounds to her head, face, arms and hands.

A motive for the alleged assault was not immediately clear.

In September 1986, Penguelly hurled her 5-month-old daughter into San Diego Harbor, drowning her. Her attorneys argued that acute mental illness prompted the infanticide, and Penguelly eventually pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter. She was sentenced to six years in prison and was treated at a state psychiatric hospital before being released. Her attorneys at the time said Penguelly started her slide into mental illness after her son's birth in 1984.

A status conference is set for Nov. 14 at the South Bay Courthouse.
