News 8's Steve Price trains with the SWAT team

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - You hope you never need our SWAT team, but you're sure glad they're here when you do need them. So how do they stay on top of their game?

It is only a drill, but for San Diego's SWAT team, practice makes perfect. It's hostage rescue training, and they've invited me to experience it first hand.

One quick lesson, and it's time for action. We run through different scenarios, and at first I'm painfully lost. But with practice, I gain confidence. A man with a gun and a hostage, I'm second through the door, but the first to spot the bad guy.

It happened so fast that in the de-briefing afterward, I honestly can't remember if I even saw the suspect point his gun at me.

San Diego's SWAT team is considered one of the best in the nation, but to stay that way they're hosting a golf tournament next week to pay for necessary equipment like new bulletproof vests.

"When you start adding the bullet proof protection, not only to the torso, but the arms, the throat areas and all the things we need to do to provide the best possible protection you're looking at $1,200 to $1,500 a set,"a SWAT team member said.

But none of the money raised this year will go to fix the wall I accidentally knocked over during one of our drills. Guess I'll stick to my day job.
