VISTA (CNS) - A suspected gang member was in custody on suspicion of attempted murder Wednesday in connection with a shooting that wounded three pedestrians in a coastal North County neighborhood.
Luciano Velasquez, 23, was arrested Tuesday evening in the 300 block of Calle Montecito in Oceanside, according to police.
About 8:30 p.m. Oct. 10, officers responding to reports of gunfire in the 3400 block of Madison Street in Carlsbad found three wounded people, Sgt. Mickey Williams said. Medics took the victims -- a 26-year-old man, his 18-year-old girlfriend and a 16-year-old friend of theirs -- to hospitals for treatment of non-life-threatening wounds.
Witnesses told police the victims were walking through the area, known as the Barrio, when a blue four-door sedan with several people in it pulled up alongside of them.
Following an exchange of words between the two groups, Velasquez allegedly got out of a passenger seat and opened fire with a black pistol, wounding all three victims in their arms and legs and grazing one on the abdomen.
The shooter then got back into the vehicle and fled to the north with his companions, according to Williams.
Velasquez was booked into Vista Jail early this morning on suspicion of three counts of attempted murder and participating in a street gang. He was being held without bail pending arraignment, tentatively scheduled for Thursday afternoon.
