Two major candidates skip mayoral debate

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - On the same day that the San Diego police union officially endorsed Nathan Fletcher for mayor, the Republican Assembly member went head-to-head in a debate with Democratic Congressman Bob Filner.

The debate took place at the Balboa Theater, and was sponsored by 'A Better San Diego,' a coalition of labor and community organizations.

One of the key issues distinguishing Fletcher and Filner was their stance on pension reform. While Fletcher supports a proposed ballot initiative that would end guaranteed pensions for most new city hires and instead enroll them in a 401K-style plan, Filner opposes such a proposal.

Notably absent from Wednesday night's debate were District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis and Council member Carl DeMaio.  Dumanis has said she will wait until the nomination deadline passes next March before she will debate. DeMaio's campaign says while he is willing to debate, he would not participate in Wednesday night's event, which was sponsored in part by the San Diego Labor Council, which is opposing DeMaio's candidacy through a political action committee called "Too Extreme for San Diego."
