Couple fights off man armed with machete in Normal Heights

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man who was thrown out of a Normal Heights bar early Friday for arguing with another man later attacked him and his friends with a machete, police said.

The assailant was ejected from the Triple Crown Bar on Adams Avenue and later followed the man he had argued with, his girlfriend and some other friends to an apartment complex in the 4600 block of Bancroft Street, said San Diego police Officer David Stafford.

As the group walked into the complex around 1:50 a.m., the suspect approached swinging a machete, Stafford said.

The victim grabbed the machete blade to stop the attack and suffered a cut to one of his hands, he said. But his friends overpowered the suspect and held him down until officers arrived.

The man with the machete was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. His name was not immediately released.

Both the victim and suspect are in their 30s, Stafford said.

The nature of the argument was not disclosed.
