Lawyer wants $756K for San Diego fireworks suit

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (AP) - A lawyer who sued San Diego over its annual Fourth of July fireworks display wants the city to pay him more than $756,000.

A local news source says Marco Gonzalez submitted a bill in Superior Court this week. His paperwork says he spent hundreds of hours on the case and received hate mail. He also claims the case conferred a substantial public benefit.

San Diego officials say they'll oppose the fee claim at a November hearing.

Gonzalez sued San Diego last year to force an environmental review of the La Jolla fireworks show under California law. He claimed that the explosions dump chemicals in the water and threaten animal life.

A judge ruled that a review was required but allowed the show to proceed.
