Miracle chocolate bar says it can help keep you young

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - You know the saying -- a minute on the lips, a lifetime on the hips. Now a new chocolate bar is proving you can get your fix without the slightest bit of guilt. A San Diego man is combining the indulgence of chocolate with the health benefits of red wine.

Chocolate isn't exactly known for its stellar nutritional profile, but a Rancho Santa Fe man is changing all that with a new product called the Winetime Bar.

"Why do French people who eat such rich fatty food, have less cardiovascular disease, and live longer than Americans? And they discovered the answer was red wine, and the ingredient in red wine is resveratrol," Malcolm Nicholl said.

Reservatrol is an antioxidant that is found in the skin of red grapes. Research shows the compound is not only heart-healthy, but has anti-aging benefits as well.

"Everybody knows that drinking good wine is good for you. Each of our gourmet chocolate nutrition bars has more resveratrol than more than 50 glasses of red wine." Nicholl said.

At 190 calories, and in chocolate raspberry and chocolate date and even almond flavors, the bars are being used as a snack, dessert or even a meal replacement. And while what's in it is important, Nicholl is quick to point out what's not in it, including gluten and dairy.

Considered a vegan product, the bars are also high in fiber and contain seven extra super fruits. But we couldn't help but wonder, how do they taste?

"I would eat it because it has reservatrol in it, it has something healthy in it. If I'm going to have a dessert, I want it to have something healthy," a taster said.

"Not real impressive, but if you like chocolate," another taster said.

"It tastes delicious. I especially like it because when you bite into it, it's like a soft chewy, not like a hard candy bar," a third taster said.

With a price point around $2.99, the bars can be found at Whole Foods, Vons and other local markets, and are also being picked up by a number of wineries.

Nicholl says you can forget about all that "lifetime on the hips" business, and just eat, savor and enjoy.

"It's an unbelievable combination isn't it?" he said.
