Lawn irrigation rules shift; watering can start at 4 p.m.

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego residents can now water their lawns two hours earlier in the afternoon, as of Tuesday, according to city Public Utilities Department officials.

From Nov. 1 to May 31, lawn irrigation is allowed to begin at 4 p.m. because water loss from evaporation lessens with shorter days. From June through October, city residents are not supposed to water their grass until 6 p.m.

City officials said residents can also cut back on the amount of water they use now with the cooler weather -- and automatic systems should be re-set for shorter watering times.
