Brush fire burns 600 acres near U.S.-Mexico border

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A brush fire that blackened hundreds of hilly open acres just south of the U.S.-Mexico border in the Tecate area sent smoke and ash into the San Diego region Wednesday afternoon.

The blaze, which began in the late morning, had spread over roughly 600 acres in Baja California by early afternoon, and the northern edge of the burn area had moved to within several miles of the international line, according to Cal Fire.

Smoky air and falling ash wafted into some communities in the southern reaches of San Diego County, including Chula Vista, Imperial Beach and National City, the state agency reported.
