SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Witness the seamless, timeless sound of The Mattson 2 -- drummer Jonathan and his identical twin, guitarist Jared. Their music is totally unique, their riffs and rhythms a convergence of genres.
"Our sound has to do with all the many different types of influence we have, whether it be jazz, 60s rock, 80s rock, anything," Jared said.
And even though, at age 25, they're released three albums, toured Japan seven times and Europe twice, The Mattson 2 is no overnight sensation. I first met them seven years ago when they were students at La Costa Canyon High School. Today, jamming at Lestat's, their sound is a little harder to define.
"One person described it as a kaleidoscope of Charles Mingus and Chet Baker meets the Smiths and Jesus and Mary Chain," Jonathan Mattson said.
While playing local gigs and getting ready for tours to Spain and Brazil, Jared and Jonathan are continuing their education.
"We recently got a bachelor's degree in the arts at UCSD and now we're doing our master's program at UCI," Jonathan said.
The Mattsons may still be in school, but their look is old school.
"I think image is a very important thing with music. It's the jazz mentality to always be suited up," Jared said.
The Mattson Two is the total package, their music an amazing amalgamation of melodies that spans decades. Uniquely brothers-in-arms, and twins-in-tunes.
