Bazaar del Mundo in Old Town celebrates 40th anniversary

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The 40th anniversary of Bazaar del Mundo at Old Town State Park will be celebrated Friday and Saturday with a festival featuring mariachi music, folklorico dances and discounts for shoppers.

Diane Powers opened the shops and restaurants in the park on November 4, 1971, to replicate bazaars in Mexico but lost her concession to a national company six years ago.

After losing a legal battle against the state and the new concessionaire, Delaware North Cos., she moved her shops outside park grounds next to her Casa de Guadalajara restaurant and reopened her Casa de Pico eatery at Grossmont Center in La Mesa.

She later opened an entirely new restaurant, Casa de Bandini, in Carlsbad.

A limited number of 20 percent off coupons will be passed out to visitors over the weekend, and prizes will include shopping sprees and free meals for two.
