An individual at Hilltop Drive Elementary School was recently diagnosed with tuberculosis (TB) and may have exposed students and staff to the disease, the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) reported Tuesday, November 8.

CHULA VISTA (CNS) - An unidentified person at Hilltop Drive Elementary School tested positive for tuberculosis, the county Health and Human Services Agency reported Tuesday.

The victim -- the HHSA refused to specify whether it was a student, teacher or staff member -- potentially exposed others between Aug. 30 and Sept. 20.

"Symptoms of active TB include persistent cough, fever, night sweats and unexplained weight loss," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer.

"Most people who are exposed to TB do not develop the disease, but when it does occur, it can be treated and cured with medication -- that's why it's important to identify those who have been exposed," she said.

Free testing of students will take place Nov. 15.

So far this year, there have been 195 documented tuberculosis cases in San Diego County.
