SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) – There was a double tragedy for an East County family Thursday.

A father and son were killed in two separate car accidents, on the same day, in the same area.

It all started when a mother and her 16-year-old son were in a truck that lost control on Interstate 8 and rolled, landing on Old Highway 80.

Fifty-five-year-old Natalia Sambhi suffered moderate injuries, but her son, Dev Sambhi, wasn't wearing a seatbelt and died at the scene.

Authorities say Dev's father, 48-year-old Sunil Kumar Sambhi, was so distraught that he deliberately crashed his car by driving the wrong way on the freeway. He drove straight into an on-coming car and died at the hospital.

Dev's classmates gathered for a make-shift memorial Thursday night.

A memorial for Dev is scheduled for Saturday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the T-Shirt Wholesale Mart at 1090 East Main Street in El Cajon.
