SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - With San Diego's strong military ties, Veterans Day has special meaning in America. Larry Himmel takes a moment to pay his respects to vets for their contributions.
We remain a nation divided
Beset by economic woes.
But locked in solidarity
One thing everybody knows.
Our fighting men and women
Are the best that they can be.
There to ensure our freedom
Guardians protecting you and me.
See, real heroes don't hit homers
Or score a touchdown run
They face suicide bombers
Or stare down the barrel of a gun.
Soldiers who fight for liberty.
Men and women who serve with pride.
Driven by love of country
Putting petty politics aside.
They fight in unpopular conflicts
In hellholes around the earth.
Like their comrades before them
They know what freedom's worth.
We think about their families
So far from those they love
And wish them safe return
And all the blessings from above.
To all of our local veterans
No matter where you served.
Our undying gratitude is
The least that you deserve.
And for those who died in battle
And those they left behind.
May they be always in our hearts
And forever on our mind.
We thank your for your service
On this your special day.
For your many sacrifices
To preserve the American way.
You're the essence of a hero
Standing proud and tall.
You represent the best of us
For answering your country's all.
Of the things we stand for
This great nation as a whole
Let us remember that
Wars do take their toll.
While we enjoy our freedom
Let us never once forget.
It wouldn't all be possible
If it wasn't for a vet.
