Van carrying Marines crashes into Oceanside building, injuring 3

OCEANSIDE (CNS) - An SUV crashed into two other vehicles at a coastal North County intersection Friday, then veered over a sidewalk, severely injuring a pedestrian, before plowing into a vacant building, authorities reported.

The Dodge Durango was being driven west on State Route 76 in Oceanside when it rear-ended the car and pickup truck at North Coast Highway about 11:45 a.m., according to police.

It then swerved off the road, hit a 59-year-old man walking south and smashed into an unoccupied structure that once housed a restaurant, Lt. Leonard Mata said.

Medics airlifted the pedestrian to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla for treatment of serious trauma. Two Marines in the sedan were taken to Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton with apparent minor injuries, Mata said.

The 21-year-old man driving the Durango seemed unhurt but was taken to Tri-City Medical Center for evaluation. The driver and sole occupant of the late-model truck did not require hospital care, Mata.

Intoxication did not appear to be a factor in the crash, according to Mata.

The damaged building near Oceanside Harbor has been vacant "for many years," the lieutenant said.
