EL CAJON (CBS 8) - Family and friends are now trying to make peace with the loss of a young woman hit and killed by an SUV in El Cajon.

It happened early Saturday morning in the 300 block of Main Street as 25-year-old Melissa Ferreira and another pedestrian were crossing the street.

News 8's Richard Allyn files this video report from the scene where a memorial now stands.

EL CAJON (CNS) - Two pedestrians crossing an El Cajon street in front of a bar at closing time Saturday were struck by an SUV, and one was killed, police said.

A man and woman were hit by a westbound Mitsubishi Montero in front of the El Cajon Grand Bar, 351 W. Main St., just before 2 a.m., police said.

An El Cajon police officer on patrol witnessed the crash and called it in, the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office reported.

San Diego resident Melissa N. Ferreira, 25, sustained significant injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene due to blunt force trauma, according to police and the Medical Examiner's Office.

The male pedestrian sustained injuries not believed to be life-threatening and was taken to a hospital, police said.

The SUV's driver stopped immediately following the crash and was cooperating with investigators, police said. No charges were pending, the Medical Examiner's Office reported.

Police said speed or alcohol were not believed to be factors in the crash, but police reports did not say if the pedestrians had been drinking in the bar.
