Armed taxi passenger attempts to rob cabbie

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A taxi passenger armed with a gun forced a cabbie to drive around southeast San Diego and then attempted to rob him, but ran off empty-handed, police said Saturday.

A man got into the cab in the Gaslamp District, near 5th Avenue and J Street, about 10:30 p.m. Friday, according to San Diego police Sgt. Ray Battrick.

The driver ordered the passenger out on Euclid Avenue because he was acting suspicious, but the suspect showed the driver a black short-barrel revolver and told him to keep driving, Battrick said.

The cabbie was forced to drive around the southeastern part of the city for about 10 minutes before the suspect told him to stop in the 4800 block of Market Street. The suspect demanded items but ran from the cab after the driver said he had nothing, Battrick said.

The driver was not injured and there was no loss beyond cabfare, police said. The suspect was described as light-skinned black man, about 30 years old.
