The Big Chill

Posted: Updated:

A cold morning greeted 3 Day walkers at the Del Mar Fairgrounds Friday - but the mood was very warm. Lots of smiling, laughing and cheering marked the beginning of another 60 mile journey. Once again the people of Del Mar were wonderful... especially all the businesses with decorated store fronts and staff handing out cookies, pink cupcakes and coffee to the walkers. We always love it!

I passed the Smile Guy and Little Grin (a father/daughter duo who hand out smiley face pins every year along the route) and the fact that this is my eighth year doing this event really hit me. When I walked my first 3 Day, Little Grin was a toddler in a stroller. I heard one of the walkers ask how old she is now and a very confident little girl doing cartwheels replied "I'm nine". Yes, walkers, our Little Grin is growing up.

The approach to Torrey Pines saw most of us keeping quite a quick pace as the fog and wind off the water nipped at our extremities. We were at lunch at La Jolla Shores before we knew it and that's where my walking buddy and I parted ways. Yep, Matt Baylow ditched me. It was a cold morning in the park and the usual festive atmosphere was a little subdued as a result. Like many walkers, Matt wanted to just keep going. Truth be told - I didn't blame him one bit.

I was down for a live shot during our 11 o'clock news which held me up for an hour but that's also when I met a great group of women who call themselves the Ramona Beauties. This is one of the best parts of the walk - meeting the teams, hearing their stories and finding out why they walk. Their inspiration, a one year survivor, was walking with them. I asked how she felt about the cool temperatures, the early morning start or the hill that would great us immediately after lunch as we made our way into the village. She said she just felt lucky. Lucky to be here... lucky to be able to walk. And there it was - the moment that would set the tone for the rest of the day. The air was still cold, the breeze still blowing, but the magic of this special event was outshining it all. So to all the walkers, congratulations on the first 20 miles and here's to another magical 20 Saturday!
