Navy frigate USS Rentz returns to San Diego

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The guided-missile frigate USS Rentz returned to its homeport of San Diego Monday following a six-month deployment.

The 205 officers and crew members aboard the 453-foot vessel conducted counter-narcotics operations in the Caribbean Sea and western Atlantic Ocean, said Cmdr. Michael Davis, the ship's skipper.

According to Davis, sailors arrested several suspected smugglers and prevented nearly 2,000 kilograms of cocaine from entering the United States.

The Rentz is named after Chaplain George Rentz, who died in 1942 after he gave his life jacket to a wounded sailor following the sinking of their ship, the cruiser USS Houston, in the Java Sea.
