Winter homeless shelter opens in Barrio Logan

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The city of San Diego's winter shelter for homeless adults opened Monday in Barrio Logan and was immediately filled to capacity.

The shelter run by the nonprofit Alpha Project offers 220 beds for men and women under a large tent at 16th Street and Newton Avenue. Operations are mostly funded by the city of San Diego through the San Diego Housing Commission.

"We are so grateful that we get to open in time for Thanksgiving this year and that our clients will be able to enjoy a wonderful holiday meal," said Bob McElroy, president and chief executive officer of Alpha Project.

Last year, the shelter served 700 homeless people from December until the first week of April.

The city is renovating a downtown building that will serve as a permanent homeless shelter. Officials are hoping the work will be done in time to open it around this time next year.

A winter shelter for homeless veterans will open next month in the Midway District.
