EL CAJON (CNS) - An El Cajon police officer who helped rescue a kitten trapped inside a plastic pipe today adopted the cat, police said.

The scared kitten was reported about 4 a.m. and could be heard meowing from several feet down an old electrical plastic pipe at the southeast corner of Washington and Avocado avenues, according to Monica Zech, spokeswoman for the El Cajon Police Department.

Personnel from Emergency Animal Rescue led the three-hour rescue mission, along with Heartland Fire and Rescue. The El Cajon Police Department, pulled the black and white kitten out unharmed at about 11:45 a.m. and it appeared to be "safe and sound", Zech said.

"One of our firefighters, Ben Jenkins, pulled the cat out with a makeshift catchpole," El Cajon police Captain Jim Redman said.
