Woman taken to mental facility after bogus carjacking

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A woman was taken to a county mental health facility Friday after lying to California Highway Patrol officers about being carjacked.

The unidentified woman reported the bogus carjacking while driving northbound on Interstate 5 about 3:44 a.m. She claimed that someone was harming her with a weapon but she did not specify the gender of the carjacker or the type of weapon being used, CHP officer Larry Landeros said.

Officers stayed on the phone with the caller until she exited the Interstate and stopped her vehicle on La Costa Avenue. She was then removed from the vehicle and a K-9 unit was sent in to get the carjacker. However, officers determined that there was no carjacker, Landeros said.

She was taken to a county mental health facility for evaluation.

There was no word on her current condition.
