Salvation Army unveils new giant red kettle

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Now that the holiday season is upon us, you will see the Salvation Army with their shiny little red kettles collecting money for the needy. And at La Jolla Shores Saturday, the Salvation Army unveiled its giant new red kettle.

The 5-foot red kettle made its debut Saturday at the Windansea Surf Club's annual "San Miguel Invitational" surfing competition.

There's a good reason why the huge kettle made its first appearance here.

"They've had a surfboard maker make one of the biggest kettles ever. And we're pretty excited about it because you can just drop some coins into that thing and it's going to make a huge noise. But the fact that it's made out of fiberglass and surfboard material is kind of exciting."

Some proceeds from the San Miguel Invitational will be donated to the Salvation Army and other local charitable organizations.
