County jail debuts solar power system Monday

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A solar power system is scheduled to be turned on Monday at the county's George Bailey Detention Facility.

The one-megawatt system built by SunEdison is mounted on steel canopies, which will provide shade for cars in the parking lot. The company will sell the electricity to the county for use at the jail at below-market prices.

County officials said the system, the largest on county-owned property, will save $1.3 million in utility costs over the next 20 years. They said it will provide an estimated 12 percent of the jail's energy needs.
