SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — The state Department of Finance says California is continuing its recent trend of slow population growth, standing at about 37.5 million residents as of July 1.
In new figures released Tuesday, the department said the state's population grew by less than 1 percent over a yearlong period — about 260,000 new residents.
Nearly all of the increase is due to a higher number of births than deaths in the state.
California lost about 154,000 residents to other states in the one-year span, but that was offset by about 132,000 new foreign immigrants.
Five counties — Riverside, Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego, and San Bernardino — accounted for more than half the state's growth.
California has grown by about 325,000 residents since the U.S. Census on April 1, 2010.
