SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - San Diego authorities are launching "Operation Lifesaver" Friday as part of a nationwide effort to make railroads safer.

According to the Federal Railroad Administration Office, more than 1100 people have died in railroad collisions across the state over the past ten years.

From 4 to 8 p.m. Friday night, officers will be conducting special enforcement at the First and Fifth Avenue railroad crossings.

They'll be targeting rush hour drivers and pedestrian traffic.
