More mountain lion sightings raise new questions

Posted: Updated:

SANTEE (CNS) - A fourth unconfirmed mountain lion sighting over the last five days in the San Diego area prompted a search of open areas around an East County high school late Friday morning, and the effort once again turned up no sign of a roaming puma.

An unidentified caller reported seeing what appeared to be a cougar near West Hills High School in Santee about 10:45 a.m., sheriff's Lt. Jeff Maxin said.

Administrators at the school kept students inside their classrooms while deputies and state Fish and Game officers searched the area with airborne help from a sheriff's helicopter crew. The personnel spotted no mountain lion, Maxin said.

On Thursday, there were two reported local cougar sightings - one near Oak Valley Middle School in 4S Ranch in the late morning, and another several hours later off Carmel Mountain and Black Mountain roads in Rancho Penasquitos.

Authorities found no such wild animals in those areas, either, according to Maxin.

Likewise, a report on Monday of a possible mountain lion wandering in a canyon off 4S Ranch Parkway prompted an inconclusive ground and air search.
