DESCANSO (CNS) - A person inside a burning two-story cabin in the East County mountains called emergency dispatchers for help, but was found dead inside the home by firefighters Sunday.

The person who died inside the home was reportedly Brad Hatch, according to family members.

A resident of the home on Los Terrinitos Road near Japatul Valley Road called 911 to report the fire about 8:35 p.m., CalFire captain Darryl Pina said.

When firefighters arrived at 8:43 a.m., they noticed smoke coming from the roof of the cabin, which was made of heavy timber, Pina said.

Firefighters were initially blocked from entering through the front door by heavy smoke and flame. As they knocked the flames back and made their way into the structure they found a dead body laying near the front door, Pina said.

The fire was contained by 10:25 a.m., and the flames did not spread to any other structures, Pina said.

There were no other people in the house. According to neighbors, only one person lived there.

The cause of the fire was under investigation and the extent of the damage was unknown.

The incident occurred in Descanso, about midway between Pine Valley and Alpine.
