Water main break cuts off service to City Heights residents

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A water-main break left part of a residential City Heights neighborhood without functional plumbing Wednesday.

The failed 6-inch-diameter cast-iron pipeline began flooding the roadway in the 4500 block of Myrtle Avenue about 11 a.m., according to the San Diego Water Department.

The mishap cut off water service to homes in the immediate area and others on nearby 45th and Dwight streets, SDWD spokesman Arian Collins said.

The exact number of affected addresses was not clear, he said.

The city sent in two "water wagons" to serve the affected residents pending repairs, which were expected to be complete by mid-evening, according to Collins.

The main that ruptured was believed to be more than 80 years old, the spokesman said.
