SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Homicide detectives had scant clues to work with today in their attempts to determine who gunned down a 74-year-old Tierrasanta woman at her home.

One of the victim's adult daughters found her mother dead in the house on Gabacho Drive about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to San Diego police.

The younger woman was checking on the welfare of the victim because the latter had failed to answer repeated telephone calls, SDPD Lt. Ernie Herbert said.

Police declined to release the slain woman's name, but neighbors identified her to news crews as Daisy Hayes, a longtime resident of the neighborhood just east of Interstate 15.

Investigators had little evidence to go on in the case, the homicide lieutenant said.

"We have no suspects at this time, and we do not have a motive," Herbert said.

Hayes' home showed no signs of forced entry or a life-and-death struggle, according to police.

The victim's 78-year-old husband reportedly was hospitalized at the time of the slaying.

The lieutenant declined to speculate on what might have led to Hayes' murder.

"This is a very sad case, and I don't have answers on this yet," Herbert said. "I just don't have anything on this case at this time to lead one way or the other, and I sure don't want to mislead anybody."
