POWAY (CNS) - Sheriff's helicopter personnel making flyovers above rugged, open North County terrain Monday in search of a missing man found him dead in the area.

The air crew spotted the body of 43-year-old Dan Hoff on the east side of Iron Mountain in Poway shortly before 10:30 a.m., La Mesa police Capt. Dan Willis said. A gun lay next to the dead man, according to Willis.

"The body (had) sustained a single gunshot wound, apparently self-inflicted," the captain said. "Mr. Hoff is believed to have been the victim of ... suicide."

The last known sighting of Hoff, who lived alone in an apartment on Morro Way in La Mesa, was on the evening of Dec. 12. His mother reported him missing three days later.

"A gun owned by Mr. Hoff could not be accounted for during the investigation," Willis said.

On Friday, a patrol deputy found Hoff's car abandoned in a parking lot off Poway Road at state Route 67, near the foot of Iron Mountain.

Searchers have been going through the hilly undeveloped area since Friday, aided by service dogs and airborne personnel.
