ALPINE (CNS) - The San Diego County Medical Examiner has identified the woman fatally shot during a confrontation between a suspect who held a handgun to her head and sheriff's deputies.

She was Deborah Meltzer, 40, of Alpine.

When deputies arrived at a home on Larkspur Drive near Columbine Drive at 6:24 p.m. Friday, they saw a man holding a handgun to Meltzer's head and her hands handcuffed in front of her, said San Diego sheriff's Lt. Larry Nesbit.

At some point, deputies and the suspect exchanged gunfire, and the man and Meltzer went into the house, Nesbit said.

The SWAT team entered the home to try to rescue Meltzer but found her unresponsive and suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene, he said.

The suspect, who was found near the woman, had a gunshot wound to his leg, the lieutenant said. He was taken into custody and transported to a hospital for treatment. Several handguns were found near the suspect, Nesbit said.
