Second rupture delays Clairemont main break repair

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Crews working to repair a water main rupture that caused a sinkhole in Clairemont Tuesday discovered another leak, which caused water service to about 30 customers to be shut off again shortly after it was initially restored.

A 12-inch main ruptured in the vicinity of Shawnee Road and Baker Street about 3:30 a.m., causing a 10- by 10-foot sinkhole and sending water down a residential street for more than an hour, according to San Diego police.

Water service to about 30 affected customers was restored by 2 p.m., but was shut off again about 90 minutes later when crews working to repair the rupture discovered another leak "just a few yards away," said Arian Collins of the San Diego Water Department.

He estimated that service would be restored by midnight.

The 3400 block of Shawnee Road, which was initially expected to reopen about 3:30 p.m., was expected to remain closed in both directions until about midnight, as well, Collins said.

Collins said deterioration of the pipe, which was "at least 50 years old," was the cause of the break.
