Deputies arrest man, find stolen Christmas gifts

Posted: Updated:

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. (AP) - It was a merry Christmas after all for a San Diego County family that had their holiday gifts stolen last week.

Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies have recovered more than 40 presents belonging to the family after arresting their neighbor Sunday in a separate burglary case.

Sheriff's Lt. James Royal says a Westlake Village man reported his iPad stolen by a burglar on Sunday, then traced the device to a nearby location.

After investigating, Royal says deputies arrested 20-year-old Patrick Krewson and recovered the iPad, then proceeded to search Krewson's apartment in Vista.

Royal says deputies found two flat screen TVs, a laptop and Christmas gifts stolen from a family's nearby apartment on Thursday.

It was not immediately possible to locate a number for Krewson.

THIS IS AN UPDATE TO THE PREVIOUS STORY BELOW.

VISTA (CNS) - A 20-year-old man was in custody today on suspicion of committing an early Christmas morning burglary in Los Angeles County and stealing more than 40 Christmas presents from a home in Vista three days earlier.

A Westlake Village man woke up around 3:30 a.m. Sunday to the sound of a burglar in his home in the 4000 block of Whitesail Circle, confronted the intruder and chased him a short distance before losing him, said Lt. James Royal of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Malibu/Lost Hills Station. Among the items taken from the home was an Apple iPad.

"Later that morning, the victim called the station and told the deputies his iPad was `pinging' from a nearby home," Royal said. "Deputies responded to the location, located the iPad, and arrested the suspect."

The suspect was identified as Patrick Krewson, 20, of Vista.

A follow-up investigation led deputies to the scene of a Dec. 22 burglary in Vista, where two flat screen televisions, a laptop computer and more than 40 Christmas presents were taken, Royal said. Authorities found all the stolen property from that burglary during a search of Krewson's home in Vista, he said.

"When Malibu/Lost Hills deputies notified the Vista victim that her Christmas presents had been located in time to give them to the children for Christmas, she began to cry," Royal said.

Krewson was booked into jail in Los Angeles County on suspicion of carrying out the Westlake Village burglary and was being held in lieu of $50,000 bail. San Diego authorities will file additional charges against him for the Vista burglary.
