Daughter receives unique tribute to fallen officer

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The daughter of a San Diego police officer killed in the line of duty has been given a unique tribute.

Officer James Patrick Lewis died 41 years ago Wednesday, and his daughter was presented with her father's prized motorcycle. His daughter was only 2 1/2 when her dad died. She may not remember much, but she does remember the bike like it was yesterday.

"I never got to know my dad. He was killed before I turned 3 and I never knew him," Tina Lewis said.

San Diego Officer James Patrick Lewis, who went by "Pat," was only 23. He had been on the force for two years when he was shot six times by a fugitive. For Tina, the Honda CB350 is more than just a shiny new bike. It's like reconnecting with her first love. If only her mom Karin was alive to see this moment.

"She would have loved to have seen this. I'm sorry she missed it but I'm sure she's probably had a little of a hand in this," Tina said.

The little elf that made this all happen was none other than Officer Lewis' own brother, Brian. He says the bike has bounced from family member to family member since Pat died. It seems only fitting it be returned to its original owner.

"She's been alone. She spent Christmas alone. It's a poignant day, it's always affected me," he said.

Tina can't wait to drive that motorcycle around town. She will need to get a motorcycle license, and her uncle Brian says whatever safety courses she needs to take, he'll take care of it.
